This music has special meaning, as it draws inspiration from a photograph taken by the composer’s paternal grandfather. Thought originally to be of an Elina rose, the subject of the photograph thus appears in the work’s title. Written during the composer’s first residency at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (VCCA), the music incorporates other elements of the photograph. For instance, the subtle presence of a bright yellow in the center of the rose appears musically as sunshine or warm light infused into the composition.
