Not an homage to Debussy’s Clair de lune, this music strives for an original depiction of ‘moonlight.’ Inspired by an original photograph, this music also comes from the composer’s second residency at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts (VCCA). In its circular form and phrases, the music draws from the subject of the photograph: a full moon shining along with spotlights illuminating a gazebo. In addition, the high register of the music and its absence of extensive melody reflect the photograph. To at least one observer, this music has seemed “cinematic.”
